A beautiful, kind, loving woman (my great grandmother), Avis Burrows, went peacefully to be with Jesus in Heaven yesterday, March 20, 2016, at 101 years old. Pam-ma, as she was lovingly called, was a woman with great poise and class. She loved frogs, the color aqua blue, gardening, and sewing. She was a child of God above everything else. She loved to play Skip Bo, and she loved babies and children. She was the most lovable person you’d ever met! Pam-ma was a very big part of our lives growing up, and even though I haven’t spent much time with her lately due to living in another state, I still cling to those memories.
As a child, I remember visiting Pam-ma and Grandpa at their home in Hobbs, New Mexico. Pam-ma was the one who taught me how to swallow a pill. We stood in her kitchen, and I can’t tell you how many times I spit out that
horse pill multivitamin before I finally gave in and swallowed the thing! She taught me how to play in the dirt and make mud pies. I can remember helping her in her strawberry patch in the backyard. Some of the best memories of my life are of Pam-ma and Grandpa and the time I spent in Hobbs. Grandpa passed away about 23 years ago. I was ten years old at the time, and now, my daughter is 10 years old at the time that Pam-ma has passed.
We were fortunate to have been able to attend my Pam-ma’s 100th Birthday celebration last year in Guymon, Oklahoma. She was very alert and kept telling everyone that they were “the most beautiful little thing you ever did see”! She sure did LOVE with all her heart!
Celebrating Five Generations
On July 9, 1979, Joanie Banks gave birth to a son, Jason Banks, and on that day, our family became five generations strong. I remember Grandma Breckon as she lived in a small mobile home on the lot next door to Pam-ma and Grandpa. She was just as
ornery full of life and zest as Pam-ma was! Mom said that she used to think I was her son, so she’d chase me around trying to spank me. I’m pretty sure I remember that, too! 🙂 Here is the original five generations photo taken on August 12, 1979. Great great grandma Della Breckon, Pam-ma Avis Burrows, Mimi Myrna Campbell, Mom Joanie Banks, and Brother Jason Banks.
It’s pretty rare, beautiful thing to experience five generations in your family, with a great great grandmother that lived to see a 100th birthday. Great great grandma Breckon lived to be 104!
Celebrating Five Generations for the Second Time!
Then, on July 7, 2005, I gave birth to Pam-ma’s first great great grandchild, Ava Grice. We were celebrating five generations twice! In 2011, we finally were able to get all of our family together for a family reunion, and at this point, several more great great grandchildren had joined our family. It was such a wonderful experience, and we captured the occasion once again. 32 years between the first photo and the second photo, and both my great great grandma and pam-ma lived to be over 100 years old! What a blessing to have experienced this circle of life! God is so Good!
If you’re reading the captions, the photos are switched (as you can see from Mimi’s note). One day, I hope to take another five generations photo with my kids’ kids included. I will cherish these newspaper clippings forever! They’re absolutely priceless and the most valuable items in my safe! So the next time someone asks you to take a photo with the family….smile and take the photo! You’ll be so happy you did!
And this is for you, Pam-ma! We love you so much! You are already missed!
