I failed at blogging twice before, and once I figured out my passion and refined my message and my avatar, with the help of Elite Blog Academy, I started growing. I’ll share with you what I did wrong and the exact steps to create a beautiful blog like this one.
When I created my first blog in 2012, I was trying to grow my real estate business in Georgia. It was a WordPress.com site, and it was a TERRIBLE idea! Because I had no idea what I was doing, it was clunky and had an ugly domain name. .com WordPress sites don’t allow you to customize the domain. It.Was.Atrocious. The first step in starting a blog is to set up hosting. Follow these exact steps to get the best deal on hosting with Bluehost.
Before we get started, I want you to throw everything you’ve heard about how complicated Genesis themes are out the window. I was intimidated at first to try a Genesis WordPress theme, but I was reassured when I goofed on my header and my website looked all wonky. I emailed Lauren (Restored 316 owner), and within a day she had logged into my site and fixed it for me!
Save $20 on Hosting & Choose your Theme
- First, you’ll want to sign up for ebates. If you have an account, skip to step 2. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll save $10 by using my referral link, plus you’ll save an additional $10 on your hosting purchase! I want you to be able to save the most amount of money so that you can start off on the right foot!
- Next, to go to Bluehost. They offer great hosting at really affordable prices (hint: you save more money if you go ahead and purchase hosting for longer terms, such as 2, 3, or 5 years, but you can purchase as little as a 1 year term). If you’re scared sh*tless and aren’t quite sure if this blogging thing is for you, just go with the one year term. I wrote a blog post with the steps to start a blog here. It breaks down exactly how to set up your Bluehost account and get started blogging.
- Now is the time to start dreaming about which theme you want! Who is your target audience? Who do you want to attract to your site? What is the purpose of your site? Maybe you want to feature your best recipes on the homepage or a killer About Me page. 🙂 Browse through each of these Restored 316 themes to see which one speaks to you. There are several free themes to choose from on WordPress’s dashboard. They are minimally customizable and not nearly as beautiful as the Restored 316 themes. But if you’re strapped for cash right now and just want to get your blog started, just order your hosting and you can wait until another payday to buy the fancy theme. 🙂
- After you order your hosting and theme, you’ll want to read this post on how to start getting blog traffic using Tailwind. Tailwind is absolutely free to get started! When I first started blogging, I chose the free account. After I had a few blog posts to share on Pinterest, I purchased an annual plan. After I signed up for Tailwind and Boardbooster, I grew my audience reach from 3,000 to 100,000 within 2 months! I’m a firm believer in these automation tools.
So which Restored 316 theme is your favorite? Let's hear it in the comments!
