PERFECTION HANGOVER

The pressure to prove ourselves—and the choices we make.

You can be capable, ambitious, and dependable—and still find yourself avoiding an opportunity, struggling with feedback, or taking on more than you can reasonably carry.

Sometimes the question underneath those decisions is: What will this say about me?

Melissa shares her journey from growing up poor in a blended family to starting a banking career at $7.93 an hour and entering tech without a college degree. But getting the job isn’t where the story ends.

A career change, a company reorganization, and a performance improvement plan forced her to examine how resentment and the need to prove herself were affecting her work. What followed involved taking responsibility, recognizing her strengths, and setting boundaries around the workday.

She speaks honestly about what she has learned—and the patterns she still catches herself repeating.

Something to take back to work

WHAT YOUR AUDIENCE WILL TAKE AWAY

  • Recognize the pressure.

Notice how proving yourself can influence your response to opportunities, feedback, and responsibility.

  • Check the assumptions.

Separate what you know about a situation from what you may need to clarify.

  • Choose your part.

Identify what you can act on without taking responsibility for everyone else’s decisions.

  • Take one next step.

Leave with a concrete action to take during the following week.

Three questions. One real decision.

  1. What is actually happening?
  2. What part belongs to me?
  3. What would I choose if I had nothing left to prove?

Meet your speaker

MELISSA BLEVINS

Tech leader. Creator of Perfection Hangover. Still learning, too.

I grew up poor in a blended family of nine in a three-bedroom trailer. I began my banking career earning $7.93 an hour and eventually moved into tech leadership without a college degree.

That journey gave me plenty of reasons to feel proud. It also gave me opportunities to notice how much I wanted achievement to prove that I had made it beyond my circumstances.

Through Perfection Hangover, I help high-capacity women recognize the perfectionism patterns behind their overwhelm and practice choosing differently. In business settings, I bring that same curiosity to the way we pursue opportunities, respond to setbacks, and decide what responsibility to carry.

I share experiences I’m still learning from, along with questions people can use in their own lives.
